To represent the sin pride, I choose to depict it through reflective surfaces. My concept was that someone who is overly proud, to a point of vanity, would go out of their way looking for reflective surfaces in day to day items. Things like spoons and windows become ways to admire yourself. For design style I choose a subdued color pallet and simple silhouette illustrations to keep all the items unified and give the graphic an antique vibe. The typography I choose is Jubilat, a slab serif that matches the aesthetic of the images. I was inspired by Saul Bass’s movie opening credit scenes like in Anatomy of a Murder.

My infographic shares the information the group Undergraduates for Better Education gathered by conducting surveys focusing on student’s Syracuse Education. The data I selected from the study is separated into three pie charts, each with a different focus. The three topics are how enthusiastic professors are in the classroom, how many options the students felt they had for selecting classes and how students evaluated teacher’s assistants.

The challenge I faced when it came to depicting education was representing it in a manner that is not over done. Because of this I opted to style my graphic in a clean, modern manner. For typography I choose the two typefaces Brandon and Chronicle. They compliment each other well in that they contrast styles. As for color selection, I wanted to have fun with the color scheme to bring some life and energy into my project, otherwise it would easily get too dry.

Kleeburg Envy

For my Seven Deadly Sins project I got envy as my topic. I wanted to convey the danger of envy in this short animation.  I created this feeling through using the inverted photos and flashing back and forth between that and the normal image. This reminds me of old horror movies and creates a sense of suspense and fear.

I wanted to focus on the eye because envy is seeing what others have and being jealous of that. I chose to break up the parts of the eye and animate them in separately. I think that this helps capture the audience’s attention because they cannot tell what it is at first.

As for the color scheme I wanted to keep things simple and mostly black and white. Envy is generally associated with the color green so I want to stick with that as the accent color to highlight specific things. . I wanted the background to be dark to convey that envy is a deadly sin.

I added the part at the end where the grey swirls animate in to show that envy can consume you and take over.  I think that overall it came together nicely and I am happy with the finished product.

The sources I used were just handouts from previous classes because I did not do any animation that I had not previously tried.

Knife is displayed on screen and is animated to move up and down.

Click it and the stage animates in blood, first slowly, then quickly. The screen fills with blood until the whole thing is covered. And then WRATH appears. You can click the white knife to replay the animation.

Design Strategy: 

I wanted my infographic to be playful and happy as opposed to dark and depressing, which is why I chose to research apples in New York State. I decided to show a tree growing and then have an apple fall off of it. The apple falls and eventually becomes the pie chart. Each of my sections where type heavy so I chose to do a click instead of a hover over for the info to appear. I made boxes up to that coordinate with the pie chart so one can click the boxes to see the section’s information.


I chose to use bright colors and I tried to stay within the color pallet of apples. This is a fun animation and the colors needed to reflect that.

What I learned

I learned how to add interactivity to my animation. I used the click and double click function. I also learned how to use the masking tool.

Design strategy 

My sin was lust. I chose to use the female body to represent this. First you see a glass of wine and it transforms into the red dress with lips. This is because when you drink, your inhibitions are lowered. The eye winks and then the breasts grow. Everything in this is suppose to be slow and sultry. I added music that goes along nicely and emits a feeling of desire. I am very happy with how this project turned out.


Red, white, and black. I chose to stay simple here and have white and black be accent/background colors. I wanted red to be the main color because it is the color most often associated with love and lust.

What I learned 

I learned how to think metaphorically. Usually I stay very literal, but this time, I was able to be more abstract, which I liked.

Floor, bricks, light-post animate in. Light starts to blink making the man and shadow visible/unvisable. Then they stay on and the shadows cape starts to wave!



Kelly Project Two

This project was inspired by the amount of political refugees in Syracuse. I used information from the Onondaga Citizen’s League project called the “World at our Doorstep,” which included the most recent statistics about refugee arrivals in the area. I wanted to highlight truly how international these numbers are, and how these people and families come from so many other places around the world. Another reason I wanted to highlight this was because people would never expect so many different nationalities having a large presence in Syracuse, NY, of all places.

I wanted to present this information in a really colorful way, and I wanted to incorporate either flags or countries. I chose flags, but I turned these flags into people so the numbers would feel more personable. With all of these people lined up next to one another, I was hoping to really hit home how diverse this area is, even if it is sheerly represented by colors on a flag. I chose a web typeface that was built into Edge that was clean but also looked hand drawn. I didn’t like how the sterile feel of a straight sans serif clashed with the personable project I was trying to build, so instead I chose something a little less rigid. I pulled the warm color palette for the type from various colors in the flags.

I decided to focus on farmland for my project. This was the topic that stuck out from the others on the list of options because my dad owns a family farm. Originally I wanted to use Oswego County, because I am more familiar with the Oswego County farms and farmers. However, when I was doing my research, I originally found more information on Onondaga farms. I also found a map of Onondaga county, and it’s urbanized area, that I wanted to use to inspire my design. I thought that the change in the amount of farmland over time was an effective visual representation of the farming industry.

I used fragments are different farms and crops to represent the farm area in the county. I wanted to use green to represent the farm area and to keep the map simple. The red contrasts the green well and is used to represent something “bad”, “evil”, or “dangerous”. I think the facts in the beginning are important in giving the viewer some back-story. The simple typography in the title is not too distracting from the title, but is also dynamic.

My overall concept was to communicate that Syracuse high schools are not doing very well in terms of the average graduation rate. An average graduation rate of 48% should never be acceptable. I wanted to convey this as an extreme issue.

In order to do so I chose to use dark colors, including a dark red. Dark colors and the color red are usually associated with negative ideas and red usually symbolizes something bad or dangerous. By using these colors I hoped to grab the audiences’ attention and make them feel concerned.

The first info graphic that I chose to use is a group of people icons that represent the total student population. It starts with 100 red icons and then they start dropping off the screen symbolizing the students who drop out of school. Each one that drops out leaves behind a grey icon. It ends up with 48 red icons left representing the average percent of Syracuse high school students who graduate. I thought that this was an easy way for the audience to see and compare the amount of students who drop out to the amount that graduates.

The second info graphic used is the graph showing the graduation rate at each school in the Syracuse City School District. This is a way to show the extreme range of graduation rates within the same district that can be seen easily. This is also where the interactivity comes in. You can mouse over the name of each school and a box will pop up with the graduation rate and student to teacher ratio for that school.

I also created importance through typography. In the section that presents the main fact that only 48% graduate, I used different font weights and color to create hierarchy.

I did have a little bit of difficulty with the interactivity, but after watching various tutorials I was able to figure it out.

Zebede Infrographic

I wanted to continue with my sports theme and create an infographic regarding the amount of high school athletes that make it to the pro world. With so many students and parents wishing that their sons/daughters make it, especially for economic reasons, it is important for people to see this information and understand how small the stats are.

I introduced the project with a catchy slogan “How many athletes go… from high school to pro?” using a typeface that matches that of athletics writing. I then brought in the balls of the four sports I was gonna be providing stats for. When you click on a ball, the stat comes up and tell you: how many go from HS straight to pro, from HS to college, and from college to pro in a simple bar graph.

It was a simple and interactive way to present this information.

Info-graphic Summary

The following project draws on the injustices of America’s incarceration rates. It is no surprise that there are some major discrepancies between race and gender. This info-graphic plainly shows the discrepancies of Caucasian, African American and Latino men and women.

The graphs I chose to illustrate show effectively show the discrepancies in a visual aspect with dots representing the amount of people.

I chose to use variations of black, white, and orange for this project. The black and white is supposed to convey the seriousness of the issue at hand. The orange elements work to highlight the important information. Orange is also a color that people associate with prisoners and the garments that they wear.

The interactivity is simple and meant to guide the audience to the most important information. The info-graphic starts with an animation to introduce the topic and to highlight the outstanding overall statistic.

I believe all the elements of this project work well together to convey an important message about the discrepancies involved in the U.S. justice system.

Sara Easterling- Project 2

For this project, I created and data visualization project in Edge. I had a lot of trouble thinking about how I was going to integrate interactivity in a unique way. I ended up using an extended introduction and leaving the interactive elements till the end.

Design-wise, I was actually pretty happy with the finished look. It is simple and light. The fonts I used were found in Edge: quicksand, sans serif and amatic-sc, sans serif. Because I was using rainbow elements, I decided to keep all other colors a simple black and white.

The interactivity elements I ended up using were fairly simple in concept. However, I was not able to properly execute them in practice. The idea is that religion is supposed to have a mouse-over affect that changes the circles to show information.

Katie Connelly Titanic Infographics

For this assignment, I really wanted to create an infographic that would connect with my first project that I created. Therefore, I decided to stick with the topic of the Titanic and evaluate the survival rates and death rates of Titanic passengers.

The information provided is divided into gender and into social class. I created colors to correspond to each class: yellow signifies first class and is indicated on the top section of the ship. Pink signifies second class and is shown on the section next to first class. Third class is represented by the color aqua, and is located underneath both second and first class. Crew is also represented by a dark grey color and is located at the bottom section of ship, underneath third class.

The survival rates of each social classes are further divided by children, women and men. The lightest shades represent children, the medium shades represent women and the darkest shades indicate men.

I am pretty happy with the way the piece turned out, I just think that I could do a better job of illustrating the information differently and easily. If I had to change anything, I would include more data, filling up the entire top section of the infographic. I think actually numbers would have also been neat. I would love to revisit this assignment and create buttons for each of the individuals classes and genders. That way, once the information pops up, the audience could click on each bar to receive further information.

Learning interactivity was definitely more challenging than I had anticipated however, practice makes perfect and after spending several hours trying to figure it out, I can easily guide my way around. It was very rewarding to finish this piece with successful interactive elements.

I chose to focus my info graphic on the differences between those in poverty and those who have wealth. In a article, it was reported that we have hit another low in terms of unemployment. We’re worse off than we were last year. I decided to explore what that meant exactly. In the article, it explained more people than ever in the area are turning to shelters for help.

And as it terms out, the value of food stamps in our country are being debated. Many congressmen are trying to cut he budget for food stamps, leaving many citizens hungry. California congresswoman Jackie Speier called these leaders out on this by outing them for spending nearly $200 dollars a day on food while on a trip to Ireland. This is not the only example. She sites other congressman spending their stipend on luxury foods as well. Meanwhile, those on food stamps in New York can only spend about $5 a day on food.

This stark difference is money for food is alarming and shows that the people making decisions about how their citizens live do not properly understand how their policy decisions impact their lives.Screen Shot 2013-11-20 at 3.11.38 PM
