I went to an event at Newhouse that shared in which a seminar was held on each of the eight Newhouse majors. In the time allotted to the students each person was able to pick two major information sessions to go to. Even though I am BDJ I decided to go to the Advertising and TRF information sessions. To my surprise I really enjoyed the Advertising session and found the description of the major very appealing. The panel of advertisers discussed their careers as a job that is filled with travel and exiting accounts. One of the panel members was a previous SU student who had just started working at a firm in New York City. It is crazy to me that her first job out of college is in NYC because when people speak about BDJ they usually say that your first job out of college is going to be at some small rural town in the middle of nowhere. It was refreshing to hear that advertising was different.
This event inspired me because it showed me their is more out their besides BDJ. The only problem with that is now I am temped to switch to an advertising major. I love BDJ but it is a highly competitive career choice that does not officially pay off finically or location wise when you first start. Where as advertising seems like if you apply to the right position and get it you can get good financial benefits right off the bat along with an exiting location. Also the more I thought about advertising the more in demand I realized this field is because their are a ridiculous number of ads thrown at us each today which means they need a lot of man power to develop and release those adds. Overall this advertising informational presentation inspired me because it showed me another major/career that I could see myself extremely happy in.
On Saturday I attended an event at Newhouse regarding how journalist can best use Social media in their careers. The panel of news professionals discussed the dos and don`t on what to put on your social media site. They discussed twitter and Facebook and how building a brand for yourself over social media is key when pursuing a career in journalism. They also discussed how taking videos on your phone when reporting could give you an edge up on breaking the story first. For example one of the reporters on the panel took a video of Amanda Bynes on his phone as she entered the courtroom and posted it to vine the moment the video was taken. Other people used satellite so their videos took 15 minutes to upload but because he used his phone his video was sent out immediately. His footage was the first footage seen of Amanda Bynes and it when viral. Since I am interested in entertainment news this story really stuck out to me and also it showed how social media improved his story.
This event was inspirational because it showed me how social media is not just a platform for gossip but an essential platform for news. I was not a fan of social media but this event encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and give it a try. It inspired me to create an instagram and start preparation for my career for when I graduate. This event definitely got me thinking about my future and how I can take steps over social media to create opportunities for myself. This event showed me a whole different perspective on social media that was more business orientated.
After we watched the video in class thatB.E.A.T I was extremely inspired by the high energy and originality that New Orleans Bounce music possessed. When I got out of class all I wanted to do was to share the video with all of my friends in my dorm because of the positive impact it had on me. The music was like nothing I have ever heard before and the dancing was amazing. I love how this booty shaking music was able to create a cross over between the gay community and hip hop something that stereotypically would not seem to match up. Watching the sense of community and belonging that everyone in the video felt while out dancing was extremely uplifting. When one video 9 minute video can literally make me want to plan a vacation to that destination you know the person who made it was a good story teller. One person that inspired me in particular in that video was Nicky Da B . He had such a great presence and attitude that he was impossible to ignore. After I was done sharing the video we saw in class with my friends I then went on youtube and looked up other videos`s that Nicky Da b was in.
The Video “Express your Self” is now one of my favorite videos because of the crazy beat and positive message. Through my research on Nick Da B I found out that he is a proud gay artist who is out to the public. When I watched the video I not only associated express your self with dancing but in general to be who you are and do things that make you happy. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks do things and say things that you want to and don’t hold back because you are afraid of other people`s negative comments. After watching this video, I felt happy, inspired, and ready to take on the world. This might seem like an exaggeration but Im serious his music really had an impact on me. Nicky Da B was a very talented artist could be seen as a symbol for the evolution of hip hop/rap. His openness with his sexuality will open doors for other gay rappers who may of thought they had to keep it a a secret if they wanted to make it in the business. Nicki da B will most definelty be missed and his bounce legacy will live on l;ing after his death. This week he gained a new Fan and will continue to gain fans and recognition for his work. After seeing all of the nice comments on his video it is safe to say that his influence in the New Orleans bounce music community will live on.
On Wednesday I attended the Tully Center For Speech Event, where I listened to Alan Rusbridger speak about his career in Journalism and saw him accept the Tully free speech award. Alan works as the editor of the Guardian and has experienced a lot of backlash and legal issues for publishing the truth. An Example of tho that Alan is known for is that he published the Edward Snowden story. When Alan was asked why he published this controversial story he said it was because he believed it was something the public needed to know. Watching Alan speak was extremely inspirational for me because I am majoring in broadcast Journalism so I connected with what he was saying.
Alan painted journalism in a great light and spoke about how important this industry is to the public. Alan`s Comparison of Journalism to something as essential as the police force showed how much respect he had for his job. He spoke about how the media`s job is to spread the truth to the public so they can make intelligent decisions in their own lives. When I begin my career in broadcast journalism I want to be as fearless and honest as Alan and always reveal the truth even if its a risky secret to uncover. If something is unjust and negatively affects the public than I want to be able to tell them.
Today while I was completely lost on what I was going to do for my non-fiction project on I came across this picture of my roommate Kaylynn and was instantly inspired. Today she was showing me her modeling portfolio and I was wowed by how professional her pictures were and had no idea of the extant of her modeling career. My roommate has done modeling since she is 16 years old and has dreams of one day being a high fashion model. I asked her more about her modeling background and future plans and as she was talking I could see myself really telling a great story about her. Doing a story on such an ambitious person who not only is interested in modeling but is going to school for pre-med could really change peoples views on the stereotypical dum model. Telling her story could really show a different side to the business and depict her two conflicting identities. One as a dedicated college student choosing the prestigious and honorable path as a doctor and the other as a dreamer captivated by the luxurious and fast paced lifestyle that comes with modeling.

After taking a year and a half off, I have recently decided to get back into soccer. This sport was a huge part of my life and I was nervous to step back on the field again because I was afraid that I could have lost my skills. Today was my first practice for the intermural team that I joined so I decided to search youtube for pump up sports videos. Out of all the videos I watched this one really inspired me because it showed the highs and lows that come with playing soccer and also enforced the message not to give up. When I was younger I used to say no matter how old I was that I would always be playing the sport I loved. For my freshmen year of college I felt like I was disappointing my middle school self by completely going back on my word. This video motivated me to get back on the field no matter what level I am playing at and just enjoy playing soccer.
The inspirational message I received from watching this video did not just connect to my soccer situation but also my academic struggle that I am currently facing. I am an internal transfer and adjusting to NewHouse has been much more difficult than I thought. Lately I have felt discouraged because in order for me to get back on track I have to take a lot of time consuming requirements that involve a lot of technology. My lack of knowledge about technology has been bringing me down lately because I am realizing in my major how crucial it is that I get with the times and join everyone else in our world of advanced technology. This video reminded me that nothing is just handed to you and that you have to work hard for what you want. I love my major and my new school and this clip reminded me that I worked hard to get here and I shouldn’t just give up because the work is challenging. All I can do is work that much harder to catch up with everyone else in my major. After watching this video I went from feeling frustrated and unintelligent to feeling motivated and ready to prove myself. No matter how stressful school gets or how many obstacles come my way I have to keep pushing forward to meet my goal.
This video spoke to me because it was able to completely change my mood and get me thinking with a positive attitude again. Any clip that can have such a strong effect definitely knows how to use storytelling. The audience for this video is not just soccer players but anyone who has faced adversity and needs that push to keep going and never lose sight of what they want to accomplish. This video has had an extremely positive effect on me and i can’t wait to step back on the field and hit the books to make my middle school self proud.
For this infographic, I chose to showcase the mass differences between the average income rates between New York state and Syracuse area. For the beginning portion, I chose to do a small introduction between the U.S., New York state and Syracuse. Each area is represented by a different opacity of red. At the end, the infographic allows the user to click on one of the three topics to go back and view the specific topic again.
For this doodle animation, I chose to represent my favorite actress Audrey Hepburn. I chose to represent all the places her movies have taken place and showcase a silhouette of her little black dress. The green vespa is an iconic image taken from her first big role in ‘Roman Holiday’ and I used it to represent her travel spree from Rome to Paris to London and then New York City.
The concept for this piece changed over time, many times, until I decided to make another infographic about the nuclear powers and the amount of nuclear weapons that each of them possesses. It is a topic that is always in flux, so I wanted to show the most current information (July 2013) in a simple way. I did so in a dark-humored sort of way, that might lend to the unease of the topic.
In order to elicit this dark humor, I decided to make things rather rustic and roughly done. However, I needed it to still be simple and easy to understand. To do this I used the basic and well-known shape of a bomb and some color organization of the countries throughout. The radioactive symbol at the beginning starts the whole piece off on a darker tone as well.
When it came to the colors and type, it all had to reflect back on wrath and the topic of nuclear weaponry. The colors were an easier element to implement, as one of the first colors that comes to mind when wrath, or nuclear war is uttered is that of red. In order to make the colors easier to differentiate, however, I extended the mix into oranges and pinks as well. They are all still in the warmer range of colors, but bright and pop against the crumpled paper background.
For the type, I eventually decided to do a handwritten type. To do this, I made my own typeface that was hand drawn and then implemented it for all of the type. It is rough and mainly in all caps so as to define hierarchy and also to make it bolder, as if the information is screaming at you.
Finally, the imagery was very simply done, but informative and powerful I believe. It not only provides information visually, but verbally as well through some hard numbers. The radioactive symbol at the start gets the user in the frame of mind for what will come next. Then the bomb I used is the typical little-man bomb that one often sees in association with 1950’s bomb types. The color blocks then emphasize what powers in the world hold the most nuclear threat, and it is made very clear with the interactivity.
Overall, I think that the animation illustrated the point of wrath when it comes to world powers and the threat of nuclear weapons. It communicated this information simply and with hierarchy so that the user can focus on the message that it is communicating.
I chose to use Keith Haring as inspiration for this project. When I was younger, my mom had recreated some of his paintings and hung them above my crib. They’ve stayed in my bedroom since, so his art is something very sentimental meaning to me. I wanted to briefly capture his life in this short animation.
I stole from Haring’s pop art. He uses bright fun colors and heavy black lines.
Haring was born in Reading, PA. He lived there until university. He attended the Ivy School of Professional Art in Pittsburgh before moving to New York City to pursue his own artwork. I illustrated this through animating the iconic Haring baby through Pennsylvania. Flags pop up in these landmark cities, Pittsburgh and Reading. He moves on to New York and the transition happens through the change in color. This scene is brighter and more vibrant for him because it was in NYC where he flourished and thrived as an artist. Keith Haring was diagnosed with AIDS in 1988 and a year later he established the Keith Haring Foundation. Its purpose is to provide funding and imagery to AIDS organizations and children’s programs, and to expand the audience for his work. In his final years of his life, Haring used his art to speak about his own illness and generate activism and awareness about AIDS. I tried to capture this in the red heart that haring used in a lot of this later artwork. The end screen has a link to his foundation.
For this project, I chose to create a doodle animation inspired by the life of Coco Chanel. I chose this subject because I started with the idea of wanting to create a fun, graphic, black-and-white motif (Chanel can be associated with classic black and white fabrics and patterns). As I found music to go with the animation, the animation gained some Yé-yé and 60’s inspiration as well. Any audience could view it, but I would hope that someone young and fashion-oriented would especially appreciate the references.
For this project I decided to create a personal visual biography for my animated story. The purpose is to cover main points in my life in a short, yet interesting visual story. The goal was to represent who I am and my experiences of the year. I wanted to cover more in my animation, but I decided to shorten it so that I could focus more on learning the software and not get overwhelmed.
I start with a little girl holding the kite you represent a young me. The animation at the beginning is more energetic and bouncy like a little kid. Then the animation slows down and the kite flies past the dome to represent my time here at Syracuse. Next, graduation caps flying into the air. Then the kite flies behind a cloud to represent dreams and uncertainty of the future. I wanted the animation to have an overall light and happy feel. This is why I chose to use bright colors, a cartoonish style and joyous music.
The target audience would be my friends and family and possibly future clients. I would say that the main audience is my friends and family because they are the ones who have shaped my life and would want to see my biography. Clients would be included in the audience because they will likely want to know a little bit about me before working with me. This animation would probably be featured on the main page of my portfolio website, so it would be help draw in clients.
Overall I think it turned out pretty well. I had a problem where the images that make up my kite got lost and were not showing up in edge after I finished the whole project the night before it was due. I was not able to figure out what happened because all the images were still in the image fold. Unfortunately, this meant I had to basically redo the whole thing. I was able to finish it, but fell like I could have done a better job easing the transitions and matching it to the music if I was not so rushed.
As for tutorials I mostly just used what we went over in class and the ones on Lynda.com. I also reviewed the tutorial on the blog about adding music.
For this project, I decided to recreate a scene of the Titanic. As a kid I was always fascinated by the Titanic, I used to watch the movie over and over. Because I knew I would be spending a great deal of time on this project, I wanted to choose something I really liked.
After several failed attempts at creating an idea or a solid storyline, I decided to use the Titanic due to the fact that the scene would definitely draw emotion as well as keep viewers interested. In addition, the scene has its own storyline, complete with a beginning, middle and end.
I decided I did not want to add any people or human presence in this assignment because I thought it would look too hokey and change the vibe of the piece as a whole. I think the lights flickering on and off help to create a sense of urgency and sadness to the sinking ship. I think the clouds also look very realistic and I like how they flow off the stage when the ship begins to sink.

This was the opening scene that I used for my animation. After going back and forth between ideas for my project, I decided to go with the idea of different stages of my life. I used the life cycle of a butterfly and once the butterfly grew up, I had the butterfly fly over three of the different places that have made the most impact on my life: my hometown, Syracuse and Boston, where I want to live when I get older. The music that I used for my animation is calm, simple and elegant. There are different pitch changes in the music to symbolize the different things that have happened in my life as I have grown up. As the butterfly flies off the page in the last scene, the music ends on a happy note and fades out. Overall, the animation works well to show some of the key moments that have happened in my life so far.
After thinking my original concept through, I decided that I ought to change it and show something else that I felt was a deeper part of me. This is the struggle that introverts have in an extrovert-ideal world. As an introvert, I feel that I am constantly criticized for my tendencies towards quiet. This is what spawned the idea for “The Introvert Lament.” I decided that I was going to showcase the overwhelming feeling of the extrovert-ideal on an introverted person, and the contrast within that.
Without much thought, I knew that the overall tone and feel of the piece had to be more somber and melancholy. However, this did not mean that it had to be overwhelmingly depressing. To convey this more moody melancholy, I decided to keep it very simple and hand drawn to introduce a bit of whimsy into the piece that would keep it from being too somber. Even the type was hand drawn, not only to fit with the style, but to suggest that a raw human being was behind its creation and not simply a computer.
When it came to color, I at first was going to use a pale blue to highlight the cascading words. However, I soon realized that I could create more contrast and impact if I kept everything in the “quiet zone” neutral and then introduced bright flashing colors once the noise picked up. Thus I kept everything in the beginning black, white and grey only to turn to color once the noise is introduced.
Keeping with this color style and the hand drawn elements, I wanted to find some music that would start off lilting and then increase in a noisy crescendo. After many hours of searching and not finding anything (due to my own pickiness), I decided to create my own from two tracks that possessed elements I wanted: a melodic beginning and a crashing ending. While it is not precisely what I initially envisioned, I believe that it accurately conveys the contrast that I was going for between quiet and noise.
The final element that I believe carries through my theme is that of the movement of simple elements. I purposefully wanted the initial moving shapes to be simple so as to focus on movement and color, rather than the design of the shapes themselves. I use soft grey circles at first to communicate quiet and have the words ‘quiet’, ‘thinkers’ and ‘leaders’ pop out from them and descend down as well. I incorporated some interaction when it came to the first dark square popping the last ‘leaders bubble’. As I played with more interaction between the elements I decided that the overall piece began to look herky jerky and didn’t flow with the continuity that I had so far. I did, however, have more pointed shapes flow into the screen to convey harshness as the noise picks up. The pace becomes faster as the intensity of music does until it crescendos into a fit of color and sketchy type to convey the oppression of the quiet by the noise.
Overall, I believe that the combination of all of these elements served to illustrate my point of the contrast between quiet and noise. The introvert and the extrovert ideal. I believe that the marriage of the music and the images creates a memorable message that people could recall in conversation. I would hope to expand on this piece more as my skills increase.
