Sam’s Categories Etc.

April 7, 2010 |  by  |  unfathomable  |  ,  |  Comments Off on Sam’s Categories Etc.

I had a hard time thinking of categories. These videos are so random. What I came up with wasn’t as creative as I would have hoped, but that’s okay. And having the One Question video be its own category, most likely at the top, would make it so we don’t have to use it as an intro video or try to make it fit in, in some other awkward way. Classic and Modern also really sum up large categories of music. Plus we really don’t know what the rest of the videos are gonna be yet.

WTF, Classic, Modern, Healing/Spiritual, Religious, Miscellaneous, and One Question.

Secondary Navigation wise, I thought we could take a little bit of that OS Dock idea once you reached the video. There could be a footprint icon that could take you back home, one little icon that brings up video controls, and another to choose a different category. All could be small enough so that you can notice them, but they don’t drive your eye away from the video.

Transition wise, I am really stumped. I am still having a hard time visualizing the concept. Hopefully once things progress a bit, my mind will catch up!

Sam’s Design Concept

So this is a REALLY rough sketch out of my idea. I wasn’t going to do really detailed drawings if this idea wasn’t even liked!

So the idea is that there is one big scene, that you can scroll back and forth through with the arrows. The two vertical black lines represent what you would actually see. I imagine the visual representations of the musicians or musical style to have some subtle animations. When you click or hover, I’m not sure what would better yet, but they have a text bubble above their head(s). When actually clicked, everything but that person/thing fades away. The text bubble will have a little info about the video, and the video controls, including a full screen option. Since everything fades away, the video would already be pretty large, but bigger is better right? Toward the bottom right of the screen, there would be a “skip to” button to quickly navigate to a certain video/ person without having to hunt through everything, saving people time if they so desire. I am guessing that most of us do not want to have to illustrate all of this though!

Sam’s LIVE From 315 Brainstorm

I just realized how terribly hard it is to find good music sites! I went through my itunes and was looking at websites for some of the artists that might have enough $$ to have an awesome site, and I was very disappointed! Some really crazy/talented/wellknown musicians have really ugly/boring sites. Some of them don’t even have any music on them!

Top 5 Sites!

1. purevolume.com

This site was pretty clean and simple. The method of listening to music was also really simple and easy to do. It wasn’t like a big box with a playlist like most sites had, which I really appreciated.

2. JasonMraz.com

I really love this site. The use of sound is hilarious. I really wouldn’t expect anything less. It makes it really easy for the user to get rid of the sound or switch to music or back to the voice too. I love the voice though.

3. http://www.kttunstall.com/

The site’s music player isn’t amazing, but it uses what looks like a tooltip, that doesn’t go away, to let you know that the song is playing. It is simple, and a little above that little box playlist that I really don’t like.

4. http://www.mikasounds.com/

Mika’s site has that little box, but alas, it was integrated pretty well. It doesn’t stand out and look hideous. What I do love about this site is the navigation. The big loopy circle actually moves when you want it to, and it is really cool.

5. http://www.adele.tv/

Overall this site has little to be desired. It is really rather boring, but I do like the integration of video as the header image. It has a pull down menu on the bottom right corner that easily allows the viewer to switch videos, and simply clicking on the video pauses it. Very convenient considering the real lack of play/pause/stop buttons.

5 WORDS!

Connection/ing, unity, dedication, movement, time

and I really wanted to include wood, since in one of the videos the man said that almost all instruments are made out of wood, and wood can provide really nice visuals and textures. 🙂

Visual Concept

I am not exactly sure where I can see this going visually quite yet, I may magically think of something right before I go to sleep, but right now I am thinking of something more raw and organic. Musically comes so naturally to these people and people in generally are naturally attracted to music, so to me it seems appropriate. The two things that I am visualizing in my head are wood and a brick wall, both which could/would be defaced/graffitied appropriately to suit the video and music style. When one would chose or click a video it would appear and the artwork on the surface would start to appear and grow, giving the viewer a sense of what they may be seeing/listening to.

download the zip

I hope this ends up working. I couldn’t figure out where/how to upload the .xml file for my music player. So it probably won’t work on here. But it does work on the regular file. At least it is showing it in the proper size this time.

I haven’t had the chance to edit some of the things from the last part of the project since I have had flash for like 2 1/2 days! That normally prevents one from working on a flash project.

Addition of Video and Music

For my use of video and music I added video to the television and music to the radio. I had to edit the buttons to make them fit with the style and with the necessary buttons for the the two players to work. I also wanted them to been relatively simple to use. The target viewer probably won’t have any trouble getting the music or video to play. I really already had the setting for the two players set up prior, so it was just a matter of adding the fancy code to make it all work.

Sam’s Zip File

Visual Message

The goal for my website was really to reflect upon LIGHTS’ personality. It is more of a cartoonish version of space, so I needed to have the basics like a flying rocket ship! It has 3 main pages and the intro page. The pages are the home page, a page with video(which does not play video) and a music page (which does not play music yet). Overall, it needed to be fun. Her current site is very related to space and she describes her music as intergalactic.

Audience

The audience of this site would be younger. Her music is more electronic and pop, so older generations would probably not enjoy her music. So the age group would be some kids, teenagers and young adults. All of which have a pretty good idea of how to use the internet. So the navigation was made so one can search around the site, or just use the control panel to get around quickly.

Animations

The site starts with an animation of a moon and a chain swinging. When clicked the chain gets a bit longer and  the site begins to load. The moon fades away, her name appears, fades out and you get to the home page. On the home page you can do a few different things. By clicking the glowing button at  the bottom of the page the control panel rises up with all of the navigation, along with bio, news and tour info, which open via hover. The button at the bottom of the control panel makes it return to its original position.

On the home page you can click either the purple or yellow planets. The music notes bounce around the yellow planet and the antenna on the television moves around on the purple planet. Each planet glows when you hover over it. When either planet is clicked, the rocket ship begins to fly to the planet, and the respective screen loads. Why have a scene in space if you can’t fly in outer space?

The yellow planet, or the music page features a radio. The radio will be functioning once we get more into adding music. After about 8 seconds, a shooting star flies through the page. From this page, you can go anywhere from the control panel, or click the purple planet to go there. The purple planet, or video page has a television on it. Music videos will eventually play on the screen. At this time, you can click the forward or backward button and it changes to screencaps of two of her videos.

Tutorials (or  lack thereof)

The only tutorials I used were the ones we talked about in class. My animations were fairly simple. I have lots of video and music that does need to be added though.

Errrr

I’m not sure why my .swf is showing up so small, or why at the bottom, what should be hidden is showing up. :-/ When I preview it in Flash, it does not look like that. I didn’t even change the size of it when I uploaded it.
