For my Seven Deadly Sins project I got envy as my topic. I wanted to convey the danger of envy in this short animation.  I created this feeling through using the inverted photos and flashing back and forth between that and the normal image. This reminds me of old horror movies and creates a sense of suspense and fear.

I wanted to focus on the eye because envy is seeing what others have and being jealous of that. I chose to break up the parts of the eye and animate them in separately. I think that this helps capture the audience’s attention because they cannot tell what it is at first.

As for the color scheme I wanted to keep things simple and mostly black and white. Envy is generally associated with the color green so I want to stick with that as the accent color to highlight specific things. . I wanted the background to be dark to convey that envy is a deadly sin.

I added the part at the end where the grey swirls animate in to show that envy can consume you and take over.  I think that overall it came together nicely and I am happy with the finished product.

The sources I used were just handouts from previous classes because I did not do any animation that I had not previously tried.

My overall concept was to communicate that Syracuse high schools are not doing very well in terms of the average graduation rate. An average graduation rate of 48% should never be acceptable. I wanted to convey this as an extreme issue.

In order to do so I chose to use dark colors, including a dark red. Dark colors and the color red are usually associated with negative ideas and red usually symbolizes something bad or dangerous. By using these colors I hoped to grab the audiences’ attention and make them feel concerned.

The first info graphic that I chose to use is a group of people icons that represent the total student population. It starts with 100 red icons and then they start dropping off the screen symbolizing the students who drop out of school. Each one that drops out leaves behind a grey icon. It ends up with 48 red icons left representing the average percent of Syracuse high school students who graduate. I thought that this was an easy way for the audience to see and compare the amount of students who drop out to the amount that graduates.

The second info graphic used is the graph showing the graduation rate at each school in the Syracuse City School District. This is a way to show the extreme range of graduation rates within the same district that can be seen easily. This is also where the interactivity comes in. You can mouse over the name of each school and a box will pop up with the graduation rate and student to teacher ratio for that school.

I also created importance through typography. In the section that presents the main fact that only 48% graduate, I used different font weights and color to create hierarchy.

I did have a little bit of difficulty with the interactivity, but after watching various tutorials I was able to figure it out.

Kleeburg project one

For this project I decided to create a personal visual biography for my animated story. The purpose is to cover main points in my life in a short, yet interesting visual story. The goal was to represent who I am and my experiences of the year. I wanted to cover more in my animation, but I decided to shorten it so that I could focus more on learning the software and not get overwhelmed.

I start with a little girl holding the kite you represent a young me. The animation at the beginning is more energetic and bouncy like a little kid. Then the animation slows down and the kite flies past the dome to represent my time here at Syracuse. Next, graduation caps flying into the air. Then the kite flies behind a cloud to represent dreams and uncertainty of the future. I wanted the animation to have an overall light and happy feel. This is why I chose to use bright colors, a cartoonish style and joyous music.

The target audience would be my friends and family and possibly future clients. I would say that the main audience is my friends and family because they are the ones who have shaped my life and would want to see my biography. Clients would be included in the audience because they will likely want to know a little bit about me before working with me. This animation would probably be featured on the main page of my portfolio website, so it would be help draw in clients.

Overall I think it turned out pretty well. I had a problem where the images that make up my kite got lost and were not showing up in edge after I finished the whole project the night before it was due. I was not able to figure out what happened because all the images were still in the image fold. Unfortunately, this meant I had to basically redo the whole thing. I was able to finish it, but fell like I could have done a better job easing the transitions and matching it to the music if I was not so rushed.

As for tutorials I mostly just used what we went over in class and the ones on I also reviewed the tutorial on the blog about adding music.

Adventure World

I chose this site because I think that it is fun and uses animation in a clever way. The purpose of the website is to promote the theme park and provide a site where people can explore what the park has to offer and even buy tickets online.

User Profile:

There are likely two different categories of users. The first category would be children between the ages of 10 and 15. They would be the main audience because they are likely the ones who want to go to theme parks and will be trying to convince their parents to take them. These are kids who have an interest in adventure and fun. I would say that there is no specific cultural background, but I would say that they would likely be middle class since the tickets are not cheap.

The other category of users would be parents (age 30-50) of the young children. The parents would be using the website to check pricing, see guidelines of the park, age appropriateness, etc. Once again I would say that there is no specific cultural background. There are no technical abilities needed.

User Interface:

I really like the animation that is incorporated into the map of the park. I think that it helps show what types of rides the park has in a creative visual way. The color scheme is very fun, which is perfect for a theme park. However, the background music and sound effects can get a little obnoxious. When you hover over the social media buttons at eh bottom the very end of the word does not change colors. Also, the monkey and ship icons on the sides of the web page do not scroll smoothly.

The function of the website is to make the user excited about visiting the park, which this site does. I also think that the website is set up nicely for those parents who are trying to research the park. There is a large navigation bar at the top that scrolls with the page and it categorizes information very well
